Today’s Good Future Tip
The Good Future Method: From English Learning to Universal Skill Building! ⚡
I developed the original English Video Method (EVM) was during my research with ESL learners in China.
My study showed that this approach significantly improved participants' English abilities, especially listening skills, and increased their motivation to learn.
I found that turning entertainment content into learning opportunities created a "complex dynamic system" of language acquisition that was both enjoyable and effective.
Today, we've refined this approach into the four-step Good Future Method:
1️⃣ Find Engaging Content: Choose videos, podcasts, articles, or any media that genuinely interests you within your target learning area.
Why this works: When you're genuinely interested in the content, your brain is naturally more receptive to learning. As one participant in Chris's study noted: "People would learn more when they can have more fun during the process."
2️⃣ Take Active Notes: Pause when you encounter something new or valuable, and document it in a format that works for you—digital notes, flashcards, or a physical notebook.
Why this works: This interruption forces your brain to process information actively rather than passively. In Chris's research, participants reported that this step "deepens the impression" of what you're learning.
3️⃣ Research & Expand: Look up unfamiliar concepts or techniques to understand them more deeply, adding context to your notes.
Why this works: This additional layer of engagement creates multiple neural pathways to the information. One research participant found that this process helped them "accumulate a lot of background knowledge" in subjects they weren't familiar with.
4️⃣ Practice Out Loud: Verbalize or physically practice what you've learned immediately after learning it.
Why this works: Speaking or physically practicing builds "muscle memory" and confidence. 15 out of 18 participants in the original study found this step particularly valuable, with one noting it gave them confidence to use new knowledge in real-world situations.

The right hashtags can dramatically increase your visibility and help you find your audience. Here's how to level up your hashtag game:
Hashtag selection strategy:
📖 Research before posting
Preview how many posts a hashtag has before using it. The sweet spot? Not too saturated (competition is fierce) but not too niche (no one's searching it).
✨ Mix popularity levels
Include a blend of:
Broad hashtags (millions of posts)
Mid-range hashtags (100K-500K posts)
Niche hashtags (under 50K posts)
📈 Track performance
Which hashtag combinations bring the most engagement? If certain tags consistently perform well, you might be discovering your content niche!
This isn't just about getting likes—it's about finding your audience and potential clients. A strategic approach to social media now could lead to paid content creation opportunities later!
Freelancer Focus
No portfolio? Create one this weekend with this hack! 💼
No clients yet? No problem! The "fake-it-till-you-make-it" portfolio strategy is a legitimate way to showcase your skills when you're just starting out.
Create 3 conceptual projects for imaginary clients that demonstrate exactly what you can do for real paying customers. This gives you something concrete to show potential clients right away.
How to build your starter portfolio:
🎨 Design for dream clients
Create sample work for the exact type of clients you want to attract. Into eco-friendly brands? Design a logo for a fictional sustainable company.
The strategy: This isn't just about having any portfolio—it's about attracting specific clients. By creating work for your ideal niche, you're essentially pre-qualifying yourself for the exact jobs you want. When potential clients see you already "get" their industry, they're more likely to trust you with their project.
✏️ Solve real problems
Show how you'd approach actual industry challenges. For writers, craft a blog post addressing a common pain point in your target niche.
The psychology: Clients hire freelancers to solve problems, not just create pretty things. By demonstrating your problem-solving process, you're showing prospects that you understand the business side of creativity. This positions you as a strategic partner, not just a task-completer.
📋 Present professionally
Display these projects as case studies with context: "Concept design for an eco-friendly startup" rather than "fake project."
The perception hack: The presentation of your work matters as much as the work itself. By framing these projects professionally, you're training clients to see you as a professional. Include your thought process, the challenges you solved, and the results you aimed for—this shows clients how you think, not just what you make.
The best part? You can create this portfolio in a single weekend, giving you something to show immediately while you hunt for your first real clients. It's an instant credibility boost that can help you land that crucial first gig!
