As we dive into February, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your New Year's resolutions and consider how you can enhance your career. Building a strong portfolio is essential if you have a dream job.
Thankfully, you’re a few steps away from other professionals with fancy websites and portfolio showcases! Here are some tips to get you started:
🎨 Identify your niche: Determine the specific area you want to focus on, whether it’s writing, design, or another field.
🖼️ Choose your best work: Curate a selection of your top projects that highlight your skills and versatility. Remember, even if you don’t have a lot to showcase, you can also start a project specifically to be added into your portfolio!
💻 Find the right platform: Choose a user-friendly platform like Behance, WordPress, or LinkedIn to display your portfolio. Try to check where popular influencers and professionals in your field often showcase their works - other professionals often follow their lead!
📞 Include testimonials: Add reviews or feedback from clients or colleagues to build credibility.

Study the writing styles of pros on LinkedIn!
To become a more compelling writer, browse LinkedIn for posts that garner high engagement. Why? They’re already using writing styles that catch the attention of not just professionals, but higher-ups in other companies.
If you nail a writing style that impresses LinkedIn professionals, you’re likely going to impress people you’re working with! Here’s how you can do this:
✅ Identify topics of interest: Focus on subjects that resonate with you and your career goals.
📈 Analyze successful posts: Look at how these posts are structured—note their tone, length, and style. Try to observe the engagement trends of the writer you want to mimic - you’ll start to notice what types of work get more engagement.
📰 Take notes: Jot down techniques or phrases that stand out and could enhance your writing. To make this less confusing, identify what parts of their posts strike you as the most interesting. And then, answer these questions:
Are they appealing because of how they were written?
Is the appeal attached to their placement in the piece?
Did they strike you as appealing because of how they called back to other parts of the piece?
✏️ Practice incorporation: Try applying these techniques in your own writing. While creating your piece, you will likely realize where these techniques fit best and how you can better incorporate them into your work!
By studying effective communication, you'll improve your ability to engage readers!

Submit an open application to influencers - they might need you!
Want to work with an influencer you admire? You might not know it, but they could be looking for another person on their team! The best way to see is submitting an open application, or an intent to apply for any open positions in a team that suits your skillsets, even if they’re not actively applying
Here’s how to write a compelling cover letter:
🪝 Start with a Hook: Begin by expressing genuine admiration for their work and how it inspires you.
📝 Highlight relevant skills: Clearly outline what skills you possess that could benefit their content creation process.
Try to alternate between showcasing a problem and a solution you can offer. Politely mention what you think are areas of improvement in their channel and how your skillset can help with that area.
✅ Be specific: Mention any ideas you have that could enhance their projects or collaborations.
Note - clients might be impressed if you already have an outline or a basic draft (with your watermarks!) prepared. This shows your initiative!
🎯 Keep it concise: Aim for clarity and brevity - no more than one page. This means everything you say must make sense.
Plus points if you have a portfolio ready to showcase!

Want another eye to look at your work? See if AI has something to say 🔍
If you’re wondering if your content is good or not, you don’t have to overcome shyness to just show it to a friend or a colleague. Instead, some AI tools are equipped to analyze content on your behalf!
While ChatGPT might need a more active subscription for more complex analyses (like videos and large datasets), these tools are often effective for analyzing your written stuff.
For example, after drafting your cover letter for your influencer open application, run it through an AI tool like ChatGPT with this prompt:
Please review my cover letter for [insert influencer's name] and provide suggestions for improvement along with explanations for each change.
